Former NFL star J.J. Watt turned a $100,000 donation into a massive relief effort after Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas in 2017. The Houston Texans defensive end launched an online fundraiser with an initial target of $200,000, but the campaign eventually raised $41.6 million, helping thousands of families recover from the disaster.
Nearly a year after the hurricane struck, Watt’s foundation announced in August 2018 that the money had been distributed to organisations working to rebuild affected communities. The campaign remains one of the most notable examples of an athlete mobilising public support for disaster relief.
According to the Houston Texans’ official website, Watt launched the fundraiser on August 27, 2017, while he was away from Houston during the storm. What began as a personal effort quickly attracted donations from more than 200,000 people across the United States and around the world.
How J.J. Watt launched the Hurricane Harvey fundraiser
Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas in August 2017, bringing torrential rainfall and devastating floods to Houston and surrounding areas. The disaster damaged homes, disrupted essential services and left thousands of residents in need of emergency assistance.
Watching the destruction unfold, Watt decided to use his public platform to raise money for the affected communities. He contributed the first $100,000 and set an initial fundraising target of $200,000.
The response far exceeded expectations. Within weeks, the campaign had raised more than $37 million. By August 2018, after additional donations and checks were accounted for, the total had reached $41.6 million.
In a statement explaining his approach, Watt said his priority was to ensure the money reached the communities most affected by the hurricane.
“Throughout this decision-making process, what mattered to me most was ensuring that the entirety of the funds would be utilized here in Houston and the surrounding areas for those who were affected most by Hurricane Harvey,” he said, according to the Houston Texans’ report.
Where the $41.6 million in donations went
Watt’s foundation worked with eight nonprofit organisations to distribute the funds and support recovery efforts. These included Americares, Feeding America, SBP, Save the Children, Habitat for Humanity, All Hands and Hearts, Boys & Girls Clubs and BakerRipley.
The organisations focused on several urgent needs, including repairing damaged homes, restoring childcare centres, providing food and delivering medical and mental health services.
The aim was not only to provide immediate assistance but also to help families and communities rebuild their lives in the months following the disaster.
How the fundraiser helped Hurricane Harvey victimsAn update released by the Houston Texans in August 2018 detailed the impact of the donations. The funds had helped clean up, repair and rebuild more than 600 homes, while more than 420 childcare centres and after-school programmes were restored or rebuilt. These facilities served more than 16,000 children.
The campaign also helped distribute more than 26 million meals to people affected by the hurricane. More than 10,000 patients received medicine, while over 6,500 people benefited from physical and mental health services.
The results showed how the donations extended beyond emergency relief, supporting housing recovery, healthcare and essential services for families across the affected region.
J.J. Watt’s Hurricane Harvey fundraiser remains a defining charitable effortWatt’s campaign demonstrated how an individual contribution can inspire a much wider response. His initial $100,000 donation and $200,000 target grew into a $41.6 million fundraising effort backed by hundreds of thousands of donors.
The former defensive star was subsequently named the NFL’s 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year, an honour recognising a player’s contributions both on and off the field.
Although the campaign took place years ago, its impact remains part of Watt’s legacy in Houston. The money raised helped rebuild homes, restore childcare facilities and provide food and healthcare to people whose lives were disrupted by Hurricane Harvey.
