Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump said Thursday (local time) that the US will levy a 35% tax on Canadian goods imports. Trump informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about the tax in a letter.

Trump shared the letter to Carney on his Truth Social social media account. He said that the tariff policy was influenced by Canada’s inability to prevent fentanyl from entering the US.

Trump said in the letter, “As you may remember, the United States placed tariffs on Canada in order to address the fentanyl epidemic in our country, which is partly due to Canada’s inability to prevent the narcotics from entering our country. Canada responded with its own tariffs rather than cooperating with the US. In addition to other sectoral tariffs, we will impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods entering the United States as of August 1, 2025.

“Transshipped goods will be subject to the higher tariff in order to avoid it. As you are aware, if Canada or businesses in your country want to construct or manufacture a product in the United States, there will be no tariff. In fact, we will make every effort to get clearances promptly, competently, and regularly—that is, within a few weeks,” he said.

Trump said in the letter that if Canada chooses to raise its duties on importing American goods, he would raise the tariff rate by the same amount. In addition, he criticized Canada’s dairy export tariffs and described the trade gap as a serious danger to the US economy and national security.

Trump stated in the letter, “I must point out that the influx of fentanyl is not the only issue we have with Canada, as they have other trade barriers, tariffs, and non-tariff policies that result in unsustainable trade deficits against the United States. In Canada, our dairy farmers are subject to exceptional tariffs of up to 400%—and that’s if they can even sell their goods to Canadians. Our economy and, in fact, our national security are seriously threatened by the trade deficit.

“We could think about changing this letter if Canada cooperates with me to halt the fentanyl supply. Depending on our partnership with your country, these tariffs might change either way. “The United States of America will never let you down,” he said.

Trump declared a 50% duty on Brazilian goods beginning August 1 on Wednesday (local time). He also referred to the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt” and said that the “trial should not take place.”

A new wave of import duties from seven countries—Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, the Philippines, Moldova, and Brunei—was also announced by Trump. On August 1, these tariffs will take effect. Letters that Trump sent to the leaders of these seven countries about the tariffs they would have to pay when exporting products to the United States have been made public by the White House.

The letters state that items imported from Algeria, Libya, Iraq, and Sri Lanka would be subject to a 30% levy from the United States. Trump said in the letters that Moldova’s exports to the United States would be subject to a 25% tax.

The letters state that a 25% tariff would be applied to imports from Brunei and a 20% duty will be applied to imports from the Philippines. Trump said in the letters that if the nations increased their taxes on importing American goods, he would raise the tariff rate by the same amount. Trump said on July 8 that tariffs will take effect on August 1, 2025, and that there would be no extensions for payment.

Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social, that “TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025, in accordance with letters sent to various countries yesterday, as well as letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time.” This date is the same as it has been and will remain the same. That is to say, no extensions will be given, and all funds will become due and payable on AUGUST 1, 2025. I appreciate you taking the time to consider this.

Trump tweeted letters his government wrote to 14 nations earlier Monday alerting them to the reciprocal tariffs that would go into force on August 1. Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Cambodia were among the countries he corresponded with.
