Speaking about Ravindra Jadeja batting with the tail-enders at Lord’s, former Indian cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu felt that the pressure got the better half of Jadeja. According to the former World Cup winner, Jaddu might have let doubts creep into his partnership with Jasprit Bumrah during the final moments at Lord’s.
While chasing the target of 193, Ravindra Jadeja got the support of tail-enders at the score of 112 for the loss of 8 wickets. Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah scored 35 important runs at a crucial time. The role of Bumrah was just to stay on strike and avoid getting dismissed for the team, which he did as he faced 54 balls.
Balwinder stated that Jadeja was mature since his young days of U-19 at NCA and he likes to be in under-pressure situations, but the reason for not trusting the tail-enders is the fear of losing the match.
“Coming to the final moments, Ravindra Jadeja is someone I’ve known since his U-19 days at the National Cricket Academy. Even back then, he showed maturity beyond his age. He’s a smart cricketer, calm under pressure, but this time, maybe the fear of failing, or the pressure of not trusting the tail, got the better of him,” Balwinder Singh Sandhu wrote about Ravindra Jadeja in his Mid-day Column
After the batting collapse in the top and middle-order lineup during the second innings, Ravindra Jadeja was the only player who was holding his bat like a sword and playing like a warrior. On Day fifth at Lord’s test Jadeja scored 61 runs on 181 balls.
Balwinder said that if Jadeja had showed some trust on Bumrah, the ending of match would have been something else. The role of tail-ender was to defend his wicket and give support to Ravindra Jadeja.
“If only he had trusted Jasprit Bumrah a bit more – especially when Bumrah was defending so well – and resisted taking that single off the fourth ball to retain strike. Had he backed himself to finish it in those last two balls, with the field up, it was a perfect moment to go for the boundary,” he noted.
Even though the Indian team lost the Lord’s Test and are trailing the series 1-2, they still have a chance to win as they aim to win the upcoming two matches- with the next match set to be held at Manchester from July 23rd.
