If you want a cosy winter weekend away, you're spoilt for choice living in the UK. There are numerous places to visit, making it challenging to choose.

From the bustling cities to the ancient forests and quaint villages, the UK is packed with gorgeous locations, but one has been named as the perfect winter getaway. The experts at Go Outdoors have recently revealed their top picks for a winter adventure and the favourite is a perfect mix of city and countryside with something for everyone to explore. By using data on snowfall, woodland walks, log-fire pubs and cabins, the experts have ranked the top UK adventure spots - and the Scottish city of Inverness has been revealed as the best.

With more than 200 winter cabins and plenty of stunning walking tracks, it's easy to see why Inverness scored so highly.

One of the most popular walks is the Inverness Castle and River Circular which takes you on a beautiful 4.5km walk through some of Scotland's most awe inspiring scenery.

You'll also pass Inverness Castle nestled in the heart of the city during your hour and a half walk.

Inverness also offers the chance to island hop - without ever leaving the city.

The Ness Islands are a series of islands in the river, all linked together by gorgeous Victorian-era footbridges.

You can enter on one side of the riverbank and exit on the other by wandering through the island and spotting sculptures as you go. It's the perfect way to spend a wintery day exploring.

While the city of Inverness itself is compact and easy to explore, it's also a great place to base yourself to see more of the Highlands. Outside the city lies the famous Loch Ness with its mysterious, mythical monster - maybe you'll be the one to catch a glimpse of her.
