New Delhi. The petition of the West Bengal government challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was heard again in the Supreme Court today. The bench of CJI Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi has extended the date of publication of the final voter list of Bengal by a week. Along with this, the bench also made it clear that a stay in the SIR process cannot be approved. He said that whatever clarity the petitioner needs regarding SIR will be given by the Supreme Court.
The top court also asked many tough questions to the Bengal government. The court asked why there was a delay in sending the names of officers for SIR work? The court also directed that the State of West Bengal ensure that all 8,555 Group B officers, whose list has been submitted today, report to the District Election Officers by the evening. The court said that the Election Commission will have the power to change the existing ERO and AERO. The court also directed that while it is the responsibility of the micro observers or state government officials to assist the ERO, the final decision will rest with the ERO.

Along with this, the court said that ERO should be given an additional time of one week after February 14 to complete the investigation and take a decision. Earlier, Mamata Banerjee raised the issue of deployment of 8,300 micro-observers appointed by the Election Commission. He claimed that all of them are officers of the Central Government. The state government also alleged that names of voters were being removed from the voter list in an unconstitutional manner. Let us tell you that earlier on February 4, during the hearing of this case, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee herself had argued.
