A sharp twist in plans hit Kolkata Knight Riders just before IPL 2026. Their move to let go of Mustafizur Rahman opened space, so they brought in Blessing Muzarabani – solid on paper, yet unfamiliar with the league’s pace. Then came Harshit Rana’s setback: a strained ligament in his right knee, picked up mid-game versus South Africa in a warm-up clash. Since then, he has had surgery. Healing has started, though there is no timeline for when he might reappear. Behind closed doors, the team now scans names, quietly weighing alternatives.

Few names on the list include Simarjeet Singh, along with KM Asif and Sandeep Warrier. Once part of both Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Simarjeet played 14 IPL games, taking 11 wickets overall. Fast bowling and sharp yorkers mark his game; back in 2022, he looked strong. Last year though? Less visible. His DPL 2025 outing stood out sharply

Out on the field at Eden Gardens, Asif and Warrier turned up for trial runs when the squad first gathered. Earlier in Mumbai, Simarjeet had already caught eyes with his work. Fast bowling is what Asif delivers – he once played for Chennai Super Kings, then later for Rajasthan Royals – but injuries keep showing up like unwanted guests. Once part of KKR’s setup himself, Warrier isn’t new to how things move around here, having worn their jersey more than once.

Matheesha Pathirana update

Waiting lingers around Matheissha Pathirana, still without approval from Sri Lanka Cricket after hurting his calf at the T20 World Cup. Not being cleared has stretched worries for KKR’s bowlers even further. Though expected earlier, he hasn’t joined camp, which deepens existing gaps in their attack.

“They are yet to confirm about his joining. We are in constant touch and almost every day tickets are being booked and cancelled for him,” a KKR source told PTI.

Fitness has come back to Umran Malik lately, giving KKR a few local choices like Vaibhav Arora, Akash Deep, Kartik Tyagi – plus him. While some names stay on the list, others wait quietly behind the scenes.

Finn Allen, plus Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra from New Zealand, should arrive soon – joining them will be Varun Chakravarthy along with Cameron Green. In a few days’ time, Akash Deep is due to link up too.
