Viewers have said they "can't wait" as ITV revealed an "exhilarating mystery thriller" featuring Sheridan Smith.

Set and shot in Australia, the six-part series Two Birds focuses on British Police Constable Izzie Cornwell (Sheridan), who comes to the small fictional town of Dugdale having been recently widowed and determined to make a fresh start and build a new life, reports the Mirror.

She aims to reconnect with her sister and to restore trust with her 20-year old daughter, who is scared by her mother's recent destructive behaviour. Yet she becomes "tangled in murder, secrets, and a dangerous family".

Gavin and Stacey star Sheridan revealed she was "thrilled to be playing the irresistibly complex Izzie Cornwell". She explained that it was "a dream role for me, as Izzie, through no fault of her own, becomes embroiled in a web of secrets and lies".

Fans welcomed ITV's announcement, with numerous individuals posting comments on social media stating they were "so excited". "Sounds amazing," remarked somebody else, while another described the cast as "legendary".

"Best news ever!" one posted on Instagram, while another predicted: "This should be great." "Fab news," responded another supporter. "Look forward to watching Sheridan," mentioned someone else.

"I am so excited for this," declared someone else, while another audience member observed: "This looks like this will be good. Sheridan Smith is a fantastic actress, whatever she does is amazing. Stephen Peacocke is a great actor too so I can't wait to watch."

ITV has released a synopsis for the series, which reveals that following her relocation to the isolated mining town, Izzie is tasked with investigating a murder alongside her new boss Matt (Stephen Peacocke).

The stakes "intensify" when the victim is revealed to be part of a notorious local crime family led by the formidable Mrs Baxter (Judy Davis).

"Determined to protect her family and uncover the truth, Mrs Baxter exerts fierce pressure on the case," it continues.

"But the night before Izzie joins the case, one reckless last hurrah goes disastrously wrong and a split-second decision results in consequences Izzie can't undo, forcing her into a secret she must do everything to contain."

Two Birds will air on ITV and STV and will stream on ITVX and STV Player.
