A punk rock veteran has shared a deeply personal update after a terrifying health scare forced him into emergency brain surgery - revealing just how close things came to spiralling out of control. Fans of New Found Glory were left stunned when guitarist Chad Gilbert disclosed he had three tumours removed from his brain following sudden neurological symptoms that began mid-tour. The 45-year-old musician had already been battling a rare adrenal cancer, but this latest chapter unfolded with frightening speed. Gilbert was rushed to A&E on February 20 after weakness in his leg caused him to collapse.
The fall came just days after he struggled to control his left hand while performing in Nashville - a warning sign that something was badly wrong. A CT scan revealed the shocking cause: three tumours in his brain. Taking to Instagram after undergoing emergency surgery, Chad described the outcome as both dramatic and hopeful. He wrote: "I regained function of my left hand immediately. My radiation oncologist described it like this: 'this is not a fatal blow and not the end of your story, just the beginning of a new chapter.'"
The rocker admitted recovery has not been straightforward but said he is steadily improving. "My recovery has been bumpy at times but I'm feeling much better now and getting stronger by the day."
He also expressed gratitude to supporters who rallied around his family during the crisis, particularly his wife Lisa Cimorelli and their four-year-old daughter.
Chad continued: "More stories to come when my brain is working well again. Love you all and am looking forward to sharing more music and fun with you as we come out of this."
Images shared alongside the post showed him recovering in hospital, including one smiling photo completing cognitive exercises designed to rebuild brain function.
Messages of support poured in from across the music world. Emo band Hawthorne Heights wrote: "We love you Chad! Keep fighting. The world is a brighter place with your riffs and positivity."
Dashboard Confessional added simply: "I love you bud." Another supporter called him the "strongest man on the planet!"
This latest medical emergency comes after years of devastating health battles. Chad was first diagnosed with cancer in December 2021 when his wife found him unconscious at home. Doctors discovered a large tumour on his adrenal gland that had already spread to his liver.
Surgeons removed the growth along with half his liver and gallbladder, and he was declared cancer-free the following month. But the relief was short-lived.
In August, cancer returned in his spine, forcing a gruelling six-hour operation to remove a vertebra and replace it with an artificial disc. The following year, further nodules were discovered in his lungs, leading to intense chemotherapy - all while he continued recording and performing.
Remarkably, the band's latest album Listen Up! dropped on the same day he experienced the hand problems that ultimately led to the discovery of the brain tumours.
New Found Glory rose to prominence in the late 1990s, achieving mainstream success with their third album Sticks and Stones, which spawned the hit My Friends Over You. Their influence helped shape an entire generation of pop-punk acts, with later bands citing them as inspiration.
