Kantara mimicry row: Karnataka HC seeks apology from Ranveer Singh

Actor Ranveer Singh is enjoying a strong run at the box office with Dhurandhar 2, but a controversy from last year is still following him.

The issue goes back to the International Film Festival of India, where the 40-year-old mimicked Rishab Shetty and his Daiva act from Kantara.

The moment drew criticism, especially after he referred to the daivas as “ghosts”.

Now, the matter has reached the Karnataka High Court.

During a hearing on 24 March, the Gully Boy actor’s legal team said he is willing to file an affidavit offering an unconditional apology.

He has also agreed to visit the Chamundi temple if directed. However, the apology itself has been questioned.

Complainant advocate Prashant Methal told the court, “Ranveer Singh’s apology was not a heartfelt apology… Because he has tweeted his apology from the handle run by his managers…”.

In response, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya said, “We will file an affidavit before the court.”

The court, meanwhile, noted that the 83 actor should continue to feel remorse and recognise the weight his public position carries.

The controversy stems from an incident where Ranveer mimicked Rishab twice on stage. On both occasions, Rishab asked him to stop.

Ranveer had earlier said, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film… If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
