Amid speculations that have been going on for several weeks, it has now come to light that tech company Oracle Corporation has once again started the process of mass layoffs. This time its impact is not limited to just one or two departments, but has affected many countries and different teams including India. According to information shared by employees, many people were informed through emails early in the morning that their services were being terminated with immediate effect.

Employees got the email at 5 or 6 in the morning

It is being told that this layoff is affecting the company’s computing and cloud business, which also includes major centers like India and Mexico. Employees shared their experiences on social media platforms and professional forums and said that this process was implemented suddenly and without any prior notice. In many cases, employees received the email at 5 or 6 in the morning and their access to internal systems was also cut off at the same time.

The situation in India is said to be especially serious. According to unofficial reports, 40 to 50 percent of the employees in some teams have been shown the door. An employee said that out of a team of 20, 6 people were asked to leave the job altogether, which has had a major impact on the workforce.

The company did not release layoff figures

Although the company has not yet officially released the layoff figures, various reports are estimating that 20,000 to 30,000 employees may be laid off globally, which could be about 15 to 18 percent of the total workforce. Among the affected employees, more people are said to be associated with cloud, engineering and technical roles.

Employees have described this process as extremely insensitive, because there was neither any prior discussion nor any transition period was given. Many people said that losing their jobs suddenly after years of service is a big shock for them.

What do experts think?

Experts believe that this step could be part of a major restructuring of the company. Oracle Corporation is currently investing heavily in Artificial Intelligence and data center infrastructure and this decision may have been taken to focus resources on these priority areas. Earlier, companies like Amazon have also done layoffs by adopting a similar strategy.

However, some experts also believe that citing AI as the reason could be just an excuse and the real reason is to balance the excessive recruitment in the tech industry. At present, this retrenchment has increased concerns about the future of thousands of employees working in the tech sector.
