On Tuesday, the municipal authority in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, issued a directive requiring local eateries to eliminate specific meat references from their names, including pork, beef, chicken, and mutton.

The Itanagar Municipal Corporation stated that numerous hotels and restaurants had registered their businesses using names that explicitly mentioned certain types of meat.

This specific naming practice is deemed “inappropriate and inconsistent with current norms and sensitivities regarding animal welfare and public decency,” according to the order.

Referencing the 2019 Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act and relevant bye-laws, the civic body mandated that establishments with names indicating a specific type of meat must adopt a more general and suitable business name.

Owners are required to update their signage and marketing materials to comply with these new guidelines within a 10-day period to avoid potential legal repercussions.

Additionally, the order specified that no new trade licenses would be granted to eateries that include any meat references in their names.
