Orchids are one of the most popular houseplants because they will flower for months without much maintenance, but getting them to bloom in spring can be tricky. Most people know that houseplants need sunlight and to be watered regularly, but orchids also need to be fed organic matter to even begin growing or flowering.
Wild orchids grow on trees rather than soil to access rainwater, which will also carry bits of dead leaves, bark and other foliage that the plant will feed on for nutrients. After winter, orchids can be depleted of the nutrients they need to grow, so it is important to feed them if you want them to grow more flower spikes this year. However, orchids only need a small amount of organic matter, so there is no need to buy anything, as the experts at Saffron's Decor have shared that teabags can actually trigger flowering.
They said: "Sometimes due to various factors, the nitrogen concentration in orchids decreases, and the pH is disturbed. As a result, the orchid plant stops blooming. '
"To cope with this problem using home remedies, black or green tea turned out to be an effective solution. Green tea has a high amount of minerals, so when we water the orchid plant with such enriched tea, it reblooms."
Teabags contain nutrients and other organic compounds that orchids need to stay healthy as they begin growing again.
They contain nitrogen, the nutrient responsible for foliage growth, which will help orchid leaves grow larger to take in more sunlight.
Tea also contains potassium which is important for root health to they can retain more water, but is also essential for buds to begin forming.
Using tea to water an orchid will give it just enough organic matter to start flowering without overfertilising the plant and will also give it the nutrients it needs to grow much bigger blooms than it usually would.
How do you feed orchids teabags? Gardeners often add teabags to compost because they are good for plants, but orchids grow in special bark mixture, so you cannot just put teabags into their pot
Instead, you need to soak the orchid roots in the tea solution, which might sound complicated but is very easy to do.
To begin, carefully remove the orchid from its pot and inspect it. If there are any old flower spikes wilting on the plant, then cut them off.
Rinse the orchid roots under running water. If the orchid roots are completely green, then leave it alone, but if you notice any shrivelled roots, then remove them as well.
Next, put your orchid in a large bowl or basin. Place a teabag in a mug and add some hot water.
Once the water is lukewarm, pour it into the container your orchid is sitting in. Then, simply leave your orchid for one day so it can soak up the tea solution.
Let your orchid soak in the tea once a month in spring, and it will give the plant a nutrient-rich bath so it will be bursting with new flower spikes in summer.
