The wait for increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) has become a little longer for lakhs of central government employees and pensioners. After the recent Union Cabinet meeting, it was expected that the DA hike would be approved, but at present no decision has been taken on it. This means that at present the DA of the employees remains at the old level of 58%. This news has definitely disappointed those people who were expecting increased salary at the beginning of the new financial year.
Usually, DA hike, which comes into effect from January, is announced by the end of March, but this time the announcement was not made despite the beginning of the month of April. According to experts, this delay is not due to any new policy, but due to administrative procedures. It is being told that DA is now approaching the magical figure of 60%, hence the government is doing the financial calculations very closely this time. Apart from this, adjusting to the changes of the 8th Pay Commission, which will be implemented from January 1, 2026, is also a major reason for this delay.
There is discussion in government circles whether such a delay is unusual? Experts say that this happens rarely, but whenever the time of implementation of the new pay commission comes near, such delays have been seen before. The government probably wants to adjust the budget and payment figures for the new financial year (2026-27) together, so that there are no technical problems in the future.
These days, there is a discussion going on on social media whether the government is going to freeze DA? However, employees need not fear as no such official statement has come from the government. DA is an essential part of the salary, which is directly linked to the inflation rate (CPI-IW). Experts believe that DA hike has not stopped, it will just come a little late. The good thing is that whenever the announcement is made, the employees will get the entire arrears from January 2026 till now at once.
Various reports are indicating that this time a 2% increase in DA is certain. With this, dearness allowance will increase from 58% to 60%. As soon as DA reaches the level of 60%, the demand to merge DA in basic salary may also increase. According to economic calculations, an employee with a basic salary of ₹ 56,100 can get arrears of around ₹ 6,700 to ₹ 7,000 from January to March.
At present, employees may feel some financial pressure as they are facing the inflation of 2026 with the salary of 2025. However, when arrears of three-four months come together, the tax burden may increase slightly in that month and the calculation of benefits like HRA and PF will also be slightly affected. Overall, it is a matter of relief that DA hike has not been frozen and its official announcement can be made by the government soon.
