The Importance of Touching Feet in Indian Culture

Indian culture is rich with traditions that have been preserved since ancient times, one of which is the practice of touching the feet of elders. It is believed that starting the day by seeking blessings from senior members of the family leads to a positive and fruitful day.

Respect and Etiquette in Touching Feet

The act of touching the feet of elders symbolizes respect and is a significant aspect of Indian etiquette. However, Vedic scriptures indicate that there are certain individuals whose feet should not be touched. Engaging in this practice with such individuals can lead to negative consequences and is considered sinful. Let's explore who should not be touched and in what contexts.

Avoid Touching Feet in Temples

When visiting temples, it is common to worship deities. If you encounter a respected elder or dignitary, it is advised not to touch their feet. The rationale behind this is that in a temple, no human being holds greater significance than the divine. Touching a person's feet in front of God is seen as disrespectful to both the deity and the temple, resulting in sin for both parties.

Do Not Touch Feet of a Sleeping Person

It is considered inappropriate to touch the feet of someone who is sleeping or lying down, as this is believed to shorten their lifespan. According to Vedic texts, only the feet of a deceased person may be touched in a lying position. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid this mistake to prevent incurring sin.

Refrain from Touching Feet of a Person Returning from a Cremation

One should never touch the feet of someone returning from a cremation ground, as they are considered impure after the last rites. It is only after they have bathed that it is acceptable to touch their feet.

Touching the Feet of One's Wife

Scriptures state that a wife should touch her husband's feet, as this is believed to enhance the family's fortune. However, husbands should never touch their wives' feet, as doing so is thought to invite misfortune and financial difficulties for the family.

Fathers Should Not Touch Their Daughters' Feet

Fathers are advised against touching the feet of their daughters, nieces, granddaughters, or any female relatives, as they are considered manifestations of divine femininity. Such actions are believed to bring sin upon the father.
