JEE Main Session 2 Results 2026: The results for JEE Main Session 2 are about to be declared. The wait for lakhs of students is finally coming to an end; however, it often happens that two or more students end up with the same total NTA scores. In such scenarios, the NTA's tie-breaking rule becomes crucial for determining the ranks. This rule also has a bearing on the subsequent counseling process and further procedures. Let us understand, in simple terms and on a paper-by-paper basis, exactly what this tie-breaking rule entails.
JEE Main Paper 1: How is a tie resolved in JEE Main Paper 1?
JEE Main Paper 1 is a computer-based examination. It comprises three subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Each subject consists of two sections:
Section A: 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
Section B: 5 Numerical Value-based Questions
The paper consists of a total of 75 questions and carries a maximum of 300 marks. Negative marking is applicable in both sections. For the numerical questions, the answer must be entered as the nearest integer.
How is the tie resolved?
If two or more students have identical total NTA scores, their NTA scores in Mathematics are compared first. The student with the higher score in Mathematics is awarded the higher rank. If the scores in Mathematics are also equal, the scores in Physics are compared. Subsequently, the scores in Chemistry are examined. If the scores remain tied across all three subjects, 'accuracy' is taken into consideration; specifically, priority is given to the student who has a lower percentage of incorrect answers relative to their total number of correct answers. If deemed necessary, this comparison of accuracy is also conducted individually for each subject—Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. If the tie remains unresolved even after these steps, both (or all) students involved are assigned the same rank.
JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch): How is a tie resolved in JEE Main Paper 2A?
JEE Main Paper 2A is designed for the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. In this examination, the Mathematics and Aptitude Tests are conducted in a computer-based mode, whereas the Drawing Test is conducted offline on an A4-sized sheet. Mathematics: 20 MCQs in Section A + 5 Numerical Questions in Section B
Aptitude Test: 50 MCQs
Drawing Test: 2 Questions
The paper carries a total of 400 marks. Negative marking is applicable in Mathematics and Aptitude.
How is a tie resolved?
First, the NTA scores in Mathematics are compared. If they are equal, the scores in the Aptitude Test are examined. Next, the scores in the Drawing Test are compared. If a tie persists, accuracy is assessed; priority is given to the candidate with a lower percentage of incorrect answers. If necessary, this accuracy is also evaluated separately for Mathematics and Aptitude. Finally, if the tie remains unresolved, both candidates are assigned the same rank.
How is a tie resolved in JEE Main Paper 2B (B. Planning)?
Paper 2B (B. Planning) is entirely computer-based. It consists of three parts: Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning-based Questions.
Mathematics: 20 MCQs in Section A + 5 Numerical Questions in Section B
Aptitude Test: 50 MCQs
Planning Section: 25 Questions
The paper carries a total of 400 marks. Negative marking applies to all sections.
What is the sequence for tie-breaking?
First, the NTA scores in Mathematics are compared. If they are equal, the scores in the Aptitude Test are examined. Next, the scores in the Planning Section are compared. If a tie persists, accuracy is assessed; priority is given to the candidate with a lower percentage of incorrect answers. If necessary, this accuracy is also evaluated separately for Mathematics and Aptitude. Finally, if the tie remains unresolved, both candidates are assigned the same rank.
What information will be included in the result?
Upon the release of the JEE Main 2026 scorecard, it will contain the following details:
Candidate's Name
Roll Number
Application Number
Session
Subject-wise NTA Percentile Score
Total NTA Score
All India Rank (AIR)
Category Rank (where applicable)
Qualifying Status for JEE Advanced 2026
Other official information issued by the NTA
Important Note
The tie-breaking rule serves solely to determine the rank. If a tie persists even after applying these rules, both students are assigned the same rank. This rank plays a crucial role in seat allotment during the counseling process. The JEE Main 2026 results are expected to be released today. In the event of a tie in your scores, the rank will be determined in accordance with the rules outlined above.
