Gladiators star Giant has revealed the 'real reason' behind his departure from the BBC programme.

The television personality had shared a post on Instagram informing fans that he would not be returning for the fourth series of the show, adding that "this wasn't a decision I made to step away" and that he "was faced with a choice that didn't align with my values".

He has since told The Sun that the issue centred on the fact that his girlfriend Taylor Ryan features on adult platform OnlyFans, reports the Mirror. He claimed he was handed an ultimatum to either end his relationship with Taylor or forfeit his role on Gladiators.

Giant, whose real name is Jamie Bigg, said: "I had to choose between dating Taylor and keeping my job."

"I was shocked and very saddened about their choice to sack me," he said.

The star revealed that he had indicated that he and Taylor wished to go public with their relationship.

He said that earlier this month he had a video call with the BBC, producer Hungry Bear and MGM, which owns the format and branding, and that he was informed there would be "a decision about whether I could appear on the next season".

He said he was later told his contract would not be renewed, and that he was "blown away".

The BBC and Hungry Bear have been approached for comment.

The former professional bodybuilder and firefighter appeared in the first three series of Gladiators, a reboot of the beloved 1990s hit.

Announcing his departure on Instagram, he wrote: "To my Gladiator family. I want to tell you all that I won't be coming back for season 4 of the TV show. Being a Gladiator has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Stepping into that arena, hearing the crowd, representing strength, resilience and being a role model... that's something I'll carry with me forever.

"What I do want to make clear is this wasn't a decision I made to step away. I was faced with a choice that didn't align with my values. And if you know me, you know this... I stand by my people and I stand by what I believe in. That's what being a role model means to me.

"I'm proud of everything I gave to the show and grateful for every single person who supported me along the way.

"This isn't the end," he told fans. "It's just the beginning. Stay strong. Stand tall."

Gladiators airs on the BBC.
