The changes, announced by Immigration New Zealand, will take effect from April 30 and will apply to the Parent Resident Visa and the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, as well as selected Pacific visa schemes.
Under New Zealand’s parent visa system, applicants must be sponsored by adult children who are citizens or residents. Sponsors are required to meet minimum income thresholds, which are typically linked to the national median wage and adjusted annually.
Existing rules already require sponsors to earn a multiple of the median income, depending on the number of parents being supported and whether sponsorship is shared. Supporting additional parents increases the required income level incrementally.

Under the revised settings, these thresholds will rise in line with the updated median wage. Immigration authorities said the changes, up around 4%, reflect the June 2025 median wage of NZ$35.00 (US$20.71) per hour, up from NZ$33.56.
According to Immigration New Zealand, Parent Resident Visa allows for a parent, grandparent or legal guardian of a New Zealand citizen or resident to stay in New Zealand indefinitely. After having had this visa for 10 years in a row, one can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa.
The Parent Boost Visitor Visa, which is a five-year, multi-entry, non-renewable visa for parents of New Zealand citizens/residents, will also be subject to higher income requirements.
Sponsors under this category must already demonstrate sufficient financial capacity based on the median wage benchmark or show that parents can support themselves independently. From April 2026, these requirements will be increased in line with the revised thresholds.

Alongside changes to parent visa settings, New Zealand will also revise income thresholds for the Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota schemes from the same date.
The Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota schemes allow successful applicants to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely.
The two schemes are annual ballot-based immigration schemes allowing Pacific nation citizens to gain permanent residence in New Zealand. They aim to strengthen regional ties. The 2026 ballots, open for registration in April 2026, invite selected individuals to apply for residency, provided they have a job offer, meet age criteria, and pass health/character checks.
For applicants with dependent children, the minimum annual income requirement will rise from NZ$54,133 to NZ$55,404, reflecting updated wage levels and cost-of-living adjustments.
Immigration New Zealand said the adjustments are part of routine annual reviews linked to wages, benefit settings, and living costs.
By tying visa thresholds to the median wage, the system ensures income requirements automatically adjust in line with broader labor market conditions, helping maintain financial self-sufficiency standards for sponsors.
