A long-standing independent shop at the heart of Llandrindod Wells is set to close its doors after more than two decades, marking the end of an era for the town's high street.
J & J Interiors, located on Middleton Street, will wind down operations over the coming months as owners Jayne and Paul Griffin prepare to step away from the business they have run for 22 years. The couple announced the decision "with great sadness," reflecting on the deep ties they have built with customers and fellow traders over the years.
"We've had lots of really good customers over the years and we're going to miss them," said Jayne to County Times. "We've made some really good friends and neighbours. It's been part of the town centre for a long time, our own little community of shopkeepers."
The shop has been a familiar fixture in the spa town, offering a mix of services including clothing alterations, furniture repairs, upholstery, and bespoke curtain and blind making. Alongside this, the store became known for its range of affordable furniture, from rugs and beds to mattresses and suites.
Jayne's career in retail began with Laura Ashley in Llanidloes before she branched out on her own in 1988, opening a shop in nearby Rhayader. While she managed that business, Paul ran the Llandrindod Wells store. The couple later joined forces on Middleton Street in the 1990s following Paul's recovery from a heart attack.
Despite decades of success, the Griffins say changing conditions on the high street have made it increasingly difficult to sustain the business. Like many independent retailers, they were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Covid happened, we closed so we took a big hit... and we never really came back," Jayne explained. "The footfall is lower and it's much quieter now."
She also pointed to shifting shopping habits and the impact of larger retailers. The opening of a nearby Tesco, she said, diverted traffic away from the town centre. "Visitors don't have to come into town at all. Shops have suffered as a result. It was very profitable back in the day, but it's just getting harder and harder to make any money."
Despite the challenges, Jayne looks back fondly on the shop's role in the community. From festive Christmas displays and markets to visits from donkeys during seasonal events, the store became more than just a place to shop.
"We've got lots of good memories to look back on," she said.
The couple will continue trading until remaining stock is cleared, encouraging customers to visit for final bargains. While the shop itself will close, Jayne plans to continue offering alteration and repair services from home, along with curtain-making, upholstery, and chair covering.
