New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout circular against Kolkata deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Shantanu Sinha Biswas in connection with a money laundering probe linked to the alleged ‘Sona Pappu syndicate’ case. The action comes amid apprehensions that the officer may attempt to leave the country.
The ED is probing the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Earlier, the agency had summoned Biswas for questioning a day before the second and final phase of polling in West Bengal. According to ED officials, he was called in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged criminal syndicate run by Sona Pappu alias Biswajit Poddar.
Sona Pappu, a resident of Ballygunge in south Kolkata, faces multiple allegations, including land grabbing, extortion and violations under the Arms Act. The ED has already arrested businessman Joy Kamdar in connection with the case.
Based on leads gathered during the investigation, ED officials conducted searches at Biswas’s residence on Fern Road earlier this month. He has not been seen in public since the raids. The agency had also summoned Biswas and his two sons, Sayantan and Manish, to its CGO Complex office, but none of them appeared.
Further investigation is underway.
