Mangaluru: In response to the rising temperatures in the city, a special 10-bed unit dedicated to treating heatstroke patients has been established on the 5th floor of the new surgical block at Wenlock District Hospital. Dr. D.S. Shivaprakash, Superintendent of Wenlock Hospital, stated that the public can contact the following emergency helpline numbers for assistance: 7483035127, 8217662885, 9945927253, and 9167607879.
Medical authorities advised that if symptoms such as a body temperature of 40°C or higher, confusion, or loss of consciousness occur, the 108 emergency service should be called immediately. Heatstroke is life-threatening and requires professional medical help. The affected person should be moved to a shaded, air-conditioned, or cool area. Rapid cooling is critical; if possible, the person should be immersed in a cold-water tub or ice water.
Cooling methods
If someone suffers from a heatstroke, water should be sprayed on their body, or they should be covered with towels or sheets soaked in cold water. Ice packs or cold wet cloths should be placed on the armpits, neck, back, and groin. A fan should be used to help water evaporate from the wet skin to accelerate cooling. If the person is conscious, provide cold water or drinks containing electrolytes. Alcohol or caffeine should be strictly avoided, and tight or thick clothing should be loosened.
Stay hydrated
The hospital superintendent urged the public to consume plenty of fluids—such as water, tender coconut water, and ORS—throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Outdoor activities should be limited or avoided between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Those working or exercising outdoors must take frequent breaks in the shade. Special care should be taken of the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses who are at higher risk.
