Amidst the excitement of IPL 2026, a big news is coming out from the camp of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). BCCI has imposed a heavy fine on RCB head coach Andy Flower. This action has been taken against him for misbehaving with the umpire during the match played against Mumbai Indians in Raipur.
The controversy started in the 18th over of the match when the umpire gave a close decision in favor of Mumbai Indians:
No-ball controversy: A full-toss ball bowled by the bowler in 17.2 overs was not declared a ‘no-ball’ by the umpire. RCB players believed that the ball was above the waist.
Coach’s anger: Andy Flower, sitting in the dugout, was so angry with this decision that he went near the boundary line and made sharp remarks against the umpire.
Use of abusive words: According to reports, Flower used ‘abuse’ towards the umpire, which was taken seriously by the match referee.
After the match the BCCI released an official statement confirming the fine imposed on Andy Flower:
Breach of Code of Conduct: Andy Flower has admitted a Level-1 offense under Article 2.20 (conduct contrary to the spirit of the game) of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Fine: He has been fined 20% of his match fee.
final call: The decision of the match referee is final and binding.
After this controversial turn, RCB’s momentum deteriorated and Mumbai Indians won this high-voltage match by 4 wickets. In this match with the historic records of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the umpiring controversy slightly dimmed the joy of victory.
This is not the first controversy regarding the level of umpiring this season. Many former cricketers have also expressed their displeasure over that decision of 17.2 overs on social media, but the coach abusing the umpire is not considered acceptable in any way.
