A quaint UK town with an artsy vibe, thriving shops and beautiful views may be familiar to eagle-eyed TV fans, given it served as the main location for BBC crime drama Happy Valley.

Much of the gripping police drama was filmed amongst this Yorkshire town as everyone's favourite officer, played by Sarah Lancashire, takes on bad guys with her strong-minded and witty ways.

In real-life, the town is a far cry from its TV alter ego. Instead, Hebden Bridge is an artsy town full of proper British pubs, a bustling high street and a feel-good atmosphere.

Part of this is down to the legacy of the creatives and bohemians who helped to shape the town in the 1970s in the aftermath of its mill closures. It has now transformed into a popular commuter town for those working in the nearby major cities and offers a countryside feel with all the charm of a traditional town with a twist.

A diverse crowd of people have flocked to Hebden Bridge over the years, including a community of hikers, as it's situated in a hotspot for walks across Yorkshire. This often means people find themselves using the town as a stopgap on their staycations, and they're pleased to find that there's more to the tiny town than they first thought.

High street

The High Street, also known as Market Street, is the beating heart of Hebden Bridge and a hub for both showcasing and supporting independent brands; you won't see any huge retailers here. Instead, the town is made up of local boutiques selling records, clothing, gifts, food produce and so much more, as locals champion buying things from their own over larger chains.

One of these special places is Something Sweet, a traditional sweet shop that one visitor dubbed 'Aladdin's cave'. They wrote on Tripadvisor: "I love this shop; no visit to Hebden is complete without a visit to this shop.

"Full of things you've not seen in years or never seen before. The staff are lovely, always friendly and always very helpful. The prices are so reasonable too. Gem of a shop."

Another standout is the unique store selling spiritual and holisitic items, Earth Spirit, which describes itself as a "safe and sacred space for all". Other shops include the likes of Heart Gallery, Hotcakes vintage shop, Totally Awesome bookshop and so many more.

Pubs

There are a number of traditional and cosy pubs within walking distance in the town's centre, perfect for a place to rest your legs after a day of shopping or explore Yorkshire's walking trails.

The Shoulder of Mutton is a cosy pub with open fires and a welcoming atmosphere with beautiful views of the River Calder. They pride themselves on serving up homemade food and

One visitor shared: "We came to this pub twice during our recent visit to Hebden and had a lovely time on both occasions. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and there's a good selection of real ales, as well as other drinks. We ate here on Friday evening and also for Sunday lunch and were impressed by the quality and service."

Another pub central to the town's drinking culture is Old Gate Bar & Restaurant. Their website claims that as an establishment they embrace the "uniqueness" of the town and its "quirky style".

Other pubs in the area include The White Swan, The Old North, The White Lion, The Mill Bar and The Railway.
