Authorities have identified Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, as the individuals responsible for the tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which resulted in the deaths of at least three adults. Reports indicate that both suspects subsequently took their own lives with self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Initially, police provided inconsistent ages for the suspects during various press briefings before confirming their actual ages.
Investigators are currently looking into potential anti-Islamic materials that were allegedly discovered in the suspects' vehicle, although no official motive has been disclosed yet. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that the investigation was initiated earlier in the day when the mother of one of the suspects reached out to law enforcement around 9:42 a.m., expressing concerns that her son was suicidal, had taken her car and firearms, and was believed to be with a companion.
This information raised immediate alarms, especially since the suspects were reportedly seen wearing camouflage clothing, which is atypical for someone in a suicidal state. It was also revealed that one of the suspects had connections to Madison High School, situated approximately a mile from the mosque. Officers were dispatched to the school while investigators worked to determine the suspects' possible locations.
At 11:43 a.m., police received reports of an active shooter at the mosque, prompting a swift response from officers already in the vicinity. Upon arrival, they discovered three victims deceased. During this response, dispatchers also received reports of another shooting involving a landscaper a few blocks away, before locating the two suspects deceased inside a vehicle. Online records from a Hudl sports profile suggest that Cain Clark was a senior at Madison High School. Investigators continue to execute search warrants and analyze evidence as the inquiry into this mass shooting progresses.
