India and Canada are moving to rebuild momentum in their economic relationship as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney for talks focused on trade, investment and long term bilateral cooperation.
According to the Indian Express report, Goyal said the two countries are working toward an early conclusion of the India Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, also known as CEPA. He also conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referred to Carney’s recent visit to India as an important step that has renewed confidence in the partnership.
Carney also highlighted the importance of the proposed trade agreement, describing it as a major opportunity for Canadian workers and businesses. He said a free trade deal with India could open access to one of the world’s largest markets while creating new possibilities for Canadian sectors looking to expand internationally.
The discussions focused on several key areas, including energy, agri food, technology and education. Both governments are now trying to move quickly after a period of strained relations, with officials from New Delhi and Ottawa working to reset ties through stronger commercial engagement.
Goyal is in Canada on a three day visit as both sides intensify efforts to finalize CEPA by the end of the year. Speaking alongside Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, he said India and Canada are aiming to raise bilateral trade from roughly USD 17 billion to USD 50 billion by 2030.
The renewed focus on trade signals a wider effort to stabilize the relationship between the two countries. For Canada, India represents a fast growing market with major demand across goods, services, education and investment. For India, Canada offers strengths in energy, agriculture, innovation, higher education and natural resources, making the proposed agreement a potentially significant step for both economies.
