Tamil Nadu Minister KA Sengottaiyan on Friday said the state government has undertaken extensive precautionary measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season and expressed confidence that the Southwest Monsoon is not expected to have a major impact on the state.


Addressing reporters in Coimbatorethe minister said review meetings have been conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to assess preparedness levels and coordinate responses across government departments.


He also commented on the resignation of K. Stay from the BJP and reiterated the state’s opposition to the proposed Mekedatu dam project.


Government reviews monsoon preparedness


Sengottaiyan said multiple review meetings have been held to evaluate the state’s readiness for the monsoon season. According to the minister, departments have been instructed to coordinate closely to ensure an effective response to any weather- challenges. He stated that the government has already undertaken precautionary measures and that departmental reviews have been completed as part of broader preparedness efforts.


The minister added that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and remain prepared to respond if required.


No need for public concern, says minister


Speaking about weather forecasts, Sengottaiyan said the Southwest Monsoon is not expected to cause any major impact on Tamil Nadu and that there is no reason for public concern at present. He noted that the government is taking preventive steps to avoid incidents such as landslides and other monsoon- disasters. The minister specifically referred to efforts aimed at preventing incidents similar to those witnessed in Wayanad in recent years.


Officials have been directed to remain vigilant in vulnerable regions and ensure that necessary preventive measures are in place.


Remarks on K. Annamalai’s resignation


When asked about K. Stay stepping down from his position in the BJP, Sengottaiyan said it would be necessary to wait and understand the reasons behind the move. “We will have to wait and see what concerns or grievances Annamalai has,” the minister said.


He did not elaborate further on the political implications of the development but indicated that more clarity may emerge in the coming days.


Tamil Nadu reiterates opposition to Mekedatu project


Responding to questions regarding the Mekedatu dam issueSengottaiyan said the Chief Minister is making all necessary efforts to prevent the construction of the project. The minister reiterated Tamil Nadu’s long-standing concerns regarding the proposed project and said the state government remains committed to protecting its interests on the issue.


He stated that the administration continues to engage with relevant authorities while maintaining its opposition to the dam proposal.


Government focused on governance agenda


Sengottaiyan also said that ministers have held discussions focused on ensuring effective governance over the next five years. According to him, departmental reviews and policy discussions have been conducted with the objective of improving administration and public service delivery.


Referring to the government’s political strategy, the minister said a coalition cabinet has been formed and that the administration remains open-minded in its approach. He added that no specific name has been assigned to the alliance.
