Shakira and Burna Boy Lead World Cup Opening Ceremonies/ TezzBuzz/ WASHINGTON/ J. Mansour/ Morning Edition/ Shakira and Burna Boy will headline the first World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico City. FIFA has planned separate opening celebrations in Mexico, Canada, and the United States featuring major international music stars. The performances will launch the 2026 World Cup and help promote the official tournament song, “Dai Dai.”
FIFA has unveiled an ambitious entertainment lineup for the 2026 World Cup, with global music stars Shakira and Burna Boy set to headline the first of three opening ceremonies scheduled across the tournament’s host nations.
The pair will perform in Mexico City ahead of the tournament opener between co-host Mexico and South Africa on Thursday. Their appearance will feature a live performance of “Dai Dai,” the official song of the World Cup.
Unlike previous tournaments that featured a single opening celebration, FIFA has opted for three separate ceremonies to reflect the tournament’s unique format being hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The Mexico City event will feature an impressive lineup of Latin American and international performers. FIFA confirmed appearances by Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and Tyla. Organizers also indicated that additional artists may still be announced.
The celebration marks the beginning of what is expected to be one of the most globally viewed sporting events in history, with matches taking place across North America throughout the tournament.
FIFA’s opening ceremony strategy extends beyond Mexico.
Toronto will host Canada’s opening celebration on June 12 before Canada takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canadian music icons Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé are scheduled to headline the festivities.
Later that same day, Los Angeles will stage the U.S. opening ceremony before the United States faces Paraguay.
The American event will feature a star-powered lineup that includes Katy Perry, global K-pop sensation LISA, Nigerian Afrobeats artist Rema, Brazilian pop star Anitta, and rapper Future.
The three separate ceremonies are designed to showcase the cultural diversity of the host nations while creating a unique identity for each stage of the tournament.
FIFA has turned to renowned Italian producer Marco Balich to oversee all three opening events.
Balich is widely recognized for producing large-scale international spectacles, including the acclaimed opening ceremony for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics earlier this year.
According to FIFA, each show will begin approximately 90 minutes before kickoff, giving fans a major entertainment experience before the action starts on the field.
The ceremonies are expected to combine live music performances, visual effects, cultural storytelling, and tributes to the host nations.
The entertainment surrounding the World Cup will continue throughout the tournament.
FIFA has already announced plans for a Super Bowl-style halftime show during the World Cup final. Shakira will return as one of the headline performers alongside pop legend Madonna and global K-pop sensation BTS.
The decision reflects FIFA’s growing emphasis on entertainment and fan engagement, mirroring strategies that have proven successful in other major sporting events.
When the World Cup was last hosted in the United States in 1994, singer Diana Ross delivered one of the most memorable opening ceremony moments.
Ross famously attempted a ceremonial penalty kick during the festivities in Chicago and narrowly missed the goal, creating a moment that remains part of World Cup folklore.
This year’s ceremonies aim to create similarly memorable moments while reaching a much larger global audience through digital platforms and expanded international coverage.
Beyond its role as the tournament anthem, “Dai Dai” also carries a philanthropic purpose.
FIFA announced that the song is intended to help raise $100 million for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. The initiative seeks to expand educational opportunities for children and young people around the world.
By linking the tournament’s music program with charitable goals, FIFA hopes to create a broader legacy beyond the competition itself.
As the countdown to kickoff continues, the combination of elite soccer and world-class entertainment is expected to make the 2026 World Cup one of the most celebrated sporting events ever staged.
