Hiccups are a problem that almost every person has experienced. It often starts while eating or suddenly due to laughing or crying. Usually it goes away on its own within a few minutes, but sometimes it persists for a long time, causing discomfort to the person.
According to experts, hiccups are to an important muscle of the body, the diaphragm. This muscle is located below the lungs and helps in breathing. When this muscle suddenly contracts, the passage near the vocal cords closes, producing a ‘hick’-like sound.
Experts say that drinking cold water slowly is a simple way to stop hiccups. When cold water passes through the throat, it signals the nerves, sending new messages to the brain and breaking the cycle of hiccups.
It is more beneficial to drink water in small sips instead of gulping it all at once. Due to this the coordination between the throat and diaphragm becomes normal.
Apart from this, holding the breath for a few seconds is also an effective solution. By taking a deep breath and stopping it, the amount of carbon dioxide in the body increases, which indicates controlling the activities of the diaphragm.
Consuming honey can also provide relief. It forms a layer on the inner surface of the throat, which provides relief to the nerves.
Putting a small amount of sugar in the mouth can also stop hiccups. The sugar grains provide a new sensory signal to the nerves, which weakens the hiccup reflex. However, diabetic patients should exercise caution before adopting it.
