100 percent Ethanol Fuel: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has taken a big decision to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign fossil fuels (petrol-diesel). He has announced that now the use of 100% ethanol fuel has been approved in the country. In a press conference organized on the occasion of completion of 12 years of NDA government in Nagpur, he told that the purpose of this step is to move rapidly towards alternative energy sources.

Nitin Gadkari said in his usual outspoken style, ‘Last night at exactly 8 pm, I signed that file and gave final approval to the rules for legal use of 100 percent ethanol.’

When people used to laugh, today that dream came true

Ethanol has the potential to become an excellent and cheap alternative to petrol, which can significantly reduce India’s huge fuel import bill. Nitin Gadkari recalled how initially people made fun of his idea. ‘When I used to talk about this dream earlier, people used to laugh. Some friends even criticized me.

But today the situation has changed. Gadkari said that many big automobile companies of the country are preparing to launch ethanol-powered vehicles in the market in the next few weeks. Companies like Toyota, Suzuki, MG and Hyundai will launch vehicles running on 100% ethanol within the next one and a half months.

India moved ahead beyond expectations

Just last week, the government introduced E85 fuel (85% ethanol mix) for flex-fuel vehicles. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri praised India’s pace in ethanol blending and said that the country has achieved its targets much ahead of schedule.

He presented this success of India through statistics,

• 2014: The mixture of ethanol in petrol was only 1.5%.


• November 2022: This figure increased to 10%.


• 2024: The target of 20% blending set by the government for 2030 was achieved 6 years in advance i.e. in 2024 itself.

Hardeep Puri said in the conversation, ‘At present we are in continuous discussion with the Automobile Association (SIAM) and other industry leaders. Meanwhile, we have also introduced E85 fuel, although currently this is only for those vehicles which are compatible with E85 flex-fuel.
