Mumbai: Director Homi Adajania’s upcoming romantic drama Cocktail 2 has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its theatrical release on June 19. The film stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles.
The certification has drawn attention as the film becomes the first adult-rated release in Kriti Sanon’s career, while advance bookings have already begun amid growing anticipation among moviegoers.
The Central Board of Film Certification has approved Cocktail 2 with an A certificate, restricting viewing to adult audiences.
The film has a reported runtime of 150 minutes, making it two hours and 30 minutes long. Advance bookings opened on June 14 and have generated significant interest due to the popularity of the original film, the youthful ensemble cast and the music associated with the franchise.
Industry observers believe the certification could influence audience expectations regarding the film’s themes and storytelling approach.
The certification marks a notable first for Kriti Sanon, whose filmography had previously not included an adult-rated release during her 12-year career in the Hindi film industry.
For Rashmika Mandanna, Cocktail 2 becomes her second A-rated Hindi film after the blockbuster Animal.
The development has sparked discussion among fans, with many expressing curiosity about the content that led to the adult certification.
For Shahid Kapoor, the film represents the fifth A-rated release of his career.
His previous adult-certified films include Kaminey, Udta Punjab, Kabir Singh and O’Romeo.
Interestingly, Cocktail 2 also marks the first time Shahid Kapoor will have two consecutive A-rated releases, as O’Romeo was his most recent theatrical outing.
The film serves as a sequel to the 2012 hit Cocktail, which was directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Maddock Films.
The original film featured Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty in lead roles and went on to become a commercial and critical success.
Unlike the sequel, the first film received a U/A certificate from the CBFC and had a runtime of 146 minutes.
The sequel has generated considerable buzz due to its association with the successful franchise, its fresh lead pairing and expectations surrounding its soundtrack.
With Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna headlining the project, the film is expected to attract significant attention from younger audiences.
Trade analysts are closely monitoring advance booking trends to gauge the film’s opening weekend prospects.
With an A certificate from the CBFC, a star-studded cast and strong franchise recognition, Cocktail 2 is heading into its release week with considerable momentum. Whether it can recreate the success of its predecessor remains to be seen, but the film has already emerged as one of the most talked-about Bollywood releases of the month.
