Shani Dev as the God of Justice: Shani Dev holds a prominent place among the *Navagrahas* (the nine celestial bodies). When his adverse gaze falls upon someone, their difficult times begin. He dispenses results based on the deeds people have performed; one reaps exactly what one has sown. If you have caused suffering to others or engaged in theft, hatred, or deceit, you become liable for punishment; conversely, those who perform good deeds receive auspicious rewards. For this reason, Shani Dev is known as the God of Justice.

Why is Shani Dev considered the arbiter of deeds?
When Shani Dev was born, he had a dark complexion; seeing this, his father, Surya Dev (the Sun God), became angry and began questioning the character of Shani Dev's mother, Chhaya. Distressed by this mental torment, Chhaya cursed him with leprosy. Upon learning this, Shani Dev became furious and pleased Lord Shiva through severe penance. Delighted by his devotion, Mahadev granted him a place among the celestial bodies and declared that the world would worship him as the God of Justice. Since then, Shani Dev has been known by this title.

What is Shani Dev's method of dispensing justice?

Shani Dev is also known as *Karmaphal-data* (the Dispenser of the Fruits of Deeds). He awards results according to one's actions. Shani Dev inevitably enters every person's life at least twice—once during the phase known as *Sade Sati* and again during *Dhaiya*. *Sade Sati* lasts for seven and a half years, while *Dhaiya* lasts for two and a half years. During these periods, he delivers the consequences of a person's actions, punishing the wicked and bestowing grace upon the righteous. During *Sade Sati* and *Dhaiya*, the pace of a person's progress slows down, and the wicked may face troubles such as lawsuits, illnesses, or accidents. By punishing individuals, he guides them back to the path of righteousness (*Dharma*).

Shani Dev does not discriminate against anyone. Whether it is a deity, a king, or a pauper, he awards results to everyone based solely on their actions. When the gaze of Shani fell upon Ravana, his entire lineage was destroyed. When King Harishchandra came under Shani's influence, he lost his entire kingdom and was reduced from a king to a pauper.
