To do this, you will simply need to use an app, SMS, or email on your phone. Based on reports regarding parcel services at major stations across the country, the Railway Board is planning to modernize parcel centers and provide better facilities for passengers.


What challenges are currently faced?


Initially, reports were prepared after inspecting parcel offices at major railway stations such as New Delhi, Anand Vihar, and Hazrat Nizamuddin. Several shortcomings were identified during this process. The reports revealed that at many stations, the cargo drop-off point and the parcel booking counter were located far apart.


This caused significant inconvenience for passengers, who had to manage booking at one location and transporting the parcel to another. Furthermore, goods often suffered damage due to improper loading or handling on trains.


Parcel centers to be equipped with modern facilities


Plans are also underway to modernize railway parcel centers. The reports recommend using advanced warehousing and machinery to ensure the proper handling and transport of goods. Additionally, battery-operated carts or small vehicles will be used to transport cargo to the platforms. Temperature-controlled storage facilities will also be introduced to safeguard fragile and perishable items.


How will real-time updates be provided?


The Railways is preparing to enhance its Parcel Management System (PMS). Through this initiative, RFID-based scanning for parcels will be introduced, enabling you to track the exact location of your consignment. You will be able to access full details regarding your parcel via a mobile app, SMS, and email. The biggest advantage of this system is that it will prevent parcels from being lost or delivered to the wrong location.
