India was bold in making a selection call before the second T20I against England at Old Trafford, Manchester as they roped in 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to give him a long-awaited international debut. The teenage batting prodigy replaced Sanju Samson in the XI after the seasoned opener failed to accumulate in the last couple of games.

The call was made after increasing demand from supporters and ex-players for Sooryavanshi to be given a chance following his spectacular performances for the IPL and India A. India finally decided to take the plunge bringing an end to weeks of speculation as to when the youngster would be given his first full international cap.

Prior to the match being called to the toss Sanju Samson was seen engaged in animated discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir at the boundary ropes. Television cameras caught Gambhir in communication with Samson as the wicketkeeper bat was fixated with his hands on his hips and his head hung down. Though the conversation was inaudible it seemed seemingly that the India coach was explaining the choice and giving senior batter a boost after losing his place in the side.

Samson Pays Price For Poor Form

Samson was an established name in the England series having been India's first-choice T20I opener but he failed to set the stage on fire. The bad run of form started with him in the two match series against Ireland where he scored 5 in the first game and was dismissed for a duck in the second game.

He also struggled in the first T20 International against England in Durham scoring just a single run before being dismissed for another cheap score.

In the last three T20I innings for Samson he got just 6 runs thus the team management couldn't retain the same Opening combination. As India wanted to come back strongly in the series, the selectors and coaching staff thought it was the time for a change.

Dream Debut For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Having displayed such sensational performances for months, finally the time came for Sooryavanshi.

The southpaw opener staked his claim into the Indian team after a memorable IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. He finished as the highest run-getter in that season with 776 runs and became the youngest player to win the Orange Cap. He also broke the record for the most number of sixes in a single IPL season by hitting 72 maximums.

Prior to his signing up for the senior squad, Sooryavanshi contributed significantly for the India A in the tri-series played in Sri Lanka.

The 19-year-old found himself in the 21-man squads for the Ireland and England tours, but had to bide his time as the team management remained convinced by Abhishek Sharma and Sanju's oppenings.

That day of waiting finally ended in Manchester as the youngster aged 15 received his first India cap.

The transfer signifies the dawn of a new era for Sooryavanshi, and for Samson that presents a surefire opportunity to fight back his way into the playing eleven. With stiff competition for spots in the Indian T20 lineup, the young opener has now received an opportunity to demonstrate he belongs there.
