Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter for Team India, has been left out of the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which kicks off on July 23. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the 15-member squad on Monday, marking the beginning of preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the LA Olympics.

Shreyas Iyer will captain the team, with Tilak Varma serving as his vice-captain. Notably, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who debuted in the first T20I against England, has retained his spot. Additionally, Prabhsimran Singh, Ashok Sharma, and Yash Thakur have received their first national call-ups.

Mayank Yadav has made a return to the T20I squad, while Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Sanju Samson have been excluded from the Zimbabwe tour.

Significant Omission of Sanju Samson

The announcement of the squad for the Zimbabwe T20I series brought significant attention to the exclusion of Sanju Samson. The cricketer, who was named Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup 2026, has been part of the ongoing T20I series against England, where he managed only 1 run in the first match before being dropped for the second.

During India's current tour of the UK, Samson's performances included scores of 5 and 0 in the T20I series against Ireland, followed by a disappointing single run off seven balls in the opening T20I against England. He was subsequently replaced by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the second match.

Despite playing a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup title defense this year, Samson's recent form has been concerning. Although he had a successful IPL season with the Chennai Super Kings, scoring 477 runs at an average of 43.36 over 14 matches, he has struggled to replicate that success on the international stage.

Fans React to Samson's Exclusion

The decision to drop Sanju Samson has ignited a heated debate among fans and analysts regarding the selection process and the perceived inconsistency in the BCCI's treatment of players who have proven themselves internationally.

Many took to social media platforms to express their disbelief, questioning how the Player of the Tournament from the T20 World Cup could be omitted after just a few low scores. Critics have pointed out the selectors' inconsistency in providing opportunities to players who have excelled on the global stage.

Some fans argued that Samson deserved more chances following his World Cup success, while others speculated that this move indicates a shift towards a younger team.

The Future of Sanju Samson in the National Team

Samson's recent exclusion raises questions about his future in the national team, especially as India appears to be focusing on nurturing younger talent. The BCCI has not provided an explanation for this decision, leading to speculation about whether it is a strategic rest for the seasoned player or a sign of a shift in selection priorities.

In his T20I career, Sanju Samson has scored 1,405 runs, including three centuries and six fifties, with an average of 27.01 and a strike rate of 155.42 across 65 matches.

It remains uncertain whether the BCCI will clarify the reasoning behind this decision in the near future, or if Samson will need to concentrate on domestic cricket to earn his way back into a rapidly evolving team.
