New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and condoled the deaths of 15 Indian tourists in the Vietnam speedboat mishap on Saturday, and assured all possible assistance to the bereaved families.


“Extremely saddened to learn about the tragic news of a boat accident involving Indian nationals near Phu Quoc, Vietnam,” the Prime Minister said on X.


“My sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. My prayers for the early recovery of the injured survivors. Our Embassy and Consulate are providing all possible assistance. Our officials are also in close contact with the Vietnamese authorities,” Modi added.


A boat carrying 36 people – 32 Indian tourists and four crew members – overturned 400 metres from shore while travelling from Hon May Rut Island.


Rescuers brought out 21 people from the overturned boat, but 15 Indian tourists – 2 women and 13 men – were confirmed dead.


The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has set up control rooms in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to provide information and assistance to families of those affected. The mission said it was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Vietnamese authorities as rescue and relief efforts continued.


Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also extended his condolences to the bereaved families.


“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and for the success of the ongoing search and rescue operations. India stands with the affected families during this difficult time. Our Embassy in Vietnam is providing all possible assistance to Indian nationals affected by this tragedy,” Rajnath said.
