In today’s fast-paced era of WhatsApp messages and social media, a simple yellow postcard has made history again in the tribal areas of Maharashtra. Millions of tribal children have raised their voices in solidarity for a fundamental right that could change the course of their lives. The fight is on for free and compulsory education for all children from 3 to 18 years. On Monday, thousands of postcards filled with the hopes, expectations and emotions of these children finally knocked the doors of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Mumbai. Right to education even after 14 years of age
Currently the Right to Education (RTE) Act guarantees free education only to children up to 14 years of age. However, Shram Jivi organization is of the opinion that such education is insufficient to break the cycle of poverty in the changing times.
The idea of free and compulsory education from 3 to 18 years was mooted by Vivek Pandit, founder of Shram Jivi Sangathan, former MLA and chairman (ministerial rank) of Tribal Development Review Committee of Maharashtra Government.
The campaign was launched on the occasion of the birthday of Vidyullatha Pandit, the founder of the organization.

This demand is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the NITI Aayog recommendations and reinforces the objective of providing every child with access to secondary and higher secondary education.

In many places, Postpetvavs were literally overflowing with these postcards. Bhiwandi, Vasai, Murbad, Wada, Kalyan and many other areas witnessed very emotional scenes during the statewide campaign of the Shramjivi Sangathan.

With a yellow postcard in his hand, he went to the post offices of his village and waved the postman’s aarti and dropped it in the red post box. About two lakh postcards were written with a single message, ‘Dear Devabhau, Give free and compulsory education to every child in Maharashtra from 3 to 18 years.
