The powerful earthquake that occurred in the southern part of Japan on Tuesday spread panic among the people. Its intensity was recorded at 7.1 on the Richter scale. After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning for coastal areas, fearing a tsunami up to one meter high. People have also been appealed to stay away from the sea and beaches immediately.
Alert issued in many provinces
Following the earthquake, the government issued an emergency warning in several prefectures on Kyushu island, including Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation and preparations are being made to deal with any emergency.
Most affected in Kumamoto
The strongest tremors were felt in Yatsushiro, Ueto, Mashiki, Misato in Kumamoto prefecture and Minami wards in Kumamoto city. The intensity of the earthquake here was recorded as 6 on the Japanese Shindo scale. Apart from this, strong tremors were also felt in Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga and Miyazaki, where the intensity was 5 or more.
Train services halted, power lost to thousands of homes
JR Kyushu temporarily halted all of its train services as a precaution immediately after the earthquake. It also includes high-speed Shinkansen trains. At the same time, power supply to about 45,600 houses in Kumamoto province was disrupted. Electricity company Kyushu Electric is busy restoring supply in the affected areas.
nuclear plant safe
Kyushu Electric Power said no technical failures or damage were reported at the Sendai and Genkai nuclear power plants despite the earthquake. Both the plants are functioning normally.
Japan is located in the Ring of Fire
Japan is counted among the most earthquake affected countries in the world. The main reason for this is that the country is located in the ‘Ring of Fire’ region around the Pacific Ocean, where there is constant movement of tectonic plates. For this reason, earthquakes occur frequently here and a large part of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or more are recorded in Japan.
