The National Testing Agency (NTA) has intensified efforts to strengthen its network of testing centers for conducting entrance examinations. As part of this initiative, the NTA aims to establish a network of standardized testing centers. To achieve this, the NTA has entrusted the responsibility to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The NTA requested the AICTE to gather necessary information regarding standardized testing centers, and the AICTE has taken charge of the task. Consequently, the AICTE has sought details regarding standardized testing centers from all higher education institutions across the country.

**AICTE Seeks Information on IT Infrastructure, Network, and Internet from Institutions**

The NTA had requested the AICTE's assistance in gathering data on IT infrastructure and available facilities within government institutions across the country. Following this, the AICTE issued directives to various institutions, including engineering colleges, government polytechnics, university departments, and management institutes. These institutions have been asked to submit the required information regarding their existing infrastructure in a prescribed format.

The requested information includes details such as the number of operational computers, IT infrastructure, networking capabilities, internet connectivity, power backup availability, CCTV systems, and other available facilities.

**Information to be Submitted by September 15**

The AICTE has requested recognized government colleges and institutions to ensure that the information provided is accurate, complete, and duly verified by the institution's competent authority. Institutions must submit the information in the prescribed format by September 15; this data will subsequently be shared with the NTA for further evaluation and necessary action.

**Why is the NTA Strengthening its Network of Standardized Testing Centers?**

The NTA already operates testing centers across the country. So, why is it focusing on strengthening the network of standardized testing centers? There are several reasons for this. Let us briefly look at them one by one.

**NEET in CBT Mode:** A key reason behind the NTA's move to strengthen its network of standardized testing centers is the plan to conduct NEET-UG in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Following the paper leak incident associated with NEET-UG 2026, the Ministry of Education has already announced that NEET-UG 2027 will be conducted in CBT mode. Currently, NEET-UG is held in pen-and-paper mode for over 22 lakh candidates on a single day, but it is expected that next year's exam—NEET-UG 2027—will shift to the CBT format. Consequently, standardized testing centers will be required to facilitate this transition.

**Plans to Conduct NEET-UG Four Times a Year:** It is anticipated that in the coming years, NEET-UG could be held up to four times annually. While these are currently just possibilities, work on the proposal is underway, and recommendations regarding this have already been submitted. If implemented, conducting NEET-UG four times a year in CBT mode would be a highly challenging task, making a robust network of standardized testing centers essential.

**Cancellation of NTA Exams:** The cancellation of NTA exams has been a major factor driving the plan to strengthen the network of standardized testing centers. In the recent past, power outages occurred at certain centers during NTA entrance exams, while other locations reported server malfunctions. These issues necessitated the cancellation of exams at the affected centers.
