Kanpur. District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Wednesday inspected the four-lane Ganga Setu project under construction near the old Ganga bridge connecting Kanpur city to Shuklaganj, Unnao. About 15 percent work of this bridge, which is being built by the State Bridge Corporation at a cost of about Rs 235 crore, has been completed. The project, which started in February 2026, is targeted to be completed by February 2028.
During the inspection, the District Magistrate took information about the physical progress of the project, pillar construction and further action plan. Officials said that the total length of the proposed four-lane bridge will be 1,196 meters and width will be 20 meters. A total of 24 pillars are to be built for the bridge, out of which preliminary structural work has been done on 14 pillars.
At present, due to increase in the water level of Ganga, construction work in the river area is affected. The construction work will be expedited again as soon as the water level subsides. The District Magistrate instructed the officials of the State Bridge Corporation that as soon as the water level becomes normal, the construction work should be expedited by deploying adequate resources and manpower and the project should be completed within the stipulated time while ensuring quality.
District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh said that this bridge is an important project to ease the traffic between Kanpur and Unnao. With its completion, the people of Central Kanpur will get better connectivity towards Lucknow via Shuklaganj and Unnao. He instructed to speed up the construction work as soon as the water level subsides and to complete the project within the stipulated time. The Old Ganga Bridge has long been a part of Kanpur's identity and heritage. Due to damage, traffic on this bridge is closed since 2021.
A new four-lane bridge is being built next to the old bridge. With its completion, the traffic from Central Kanpur towards Shuklaganj and Unnao will become easier and the traffic going towards Lucknow via Shuklaganj-Unnao will also get better connectivity. To further strengthen the connectivity between Kanpur and Unnao, work is also being done on another bridge project in the Trans Ganga area at a cost of about Rs 750 crore.
